Problem Solving and Innovation

Assumption Busting

Assumption Busting is a brainstorming technique aimed at identifying and challenging the underlying assumptions that may limit thinking and decision-making within a project. By questioning and testing these assumptions, teams can uncover new opportunities and potential innovations that were previously constrained by conventional thinking.

EFFORT

Medium, High

The effort varies depending on the number and complexity of assumptions to be tested.

DIFFICULTY

Moderate, Difficult

The technique requires critical thinking and the ability to challenge the status quo effectively, which can be intellectually demanding.

IMPLEMENTATION

  1. List Assumptions: Begin by having team members list all the known and implicit assumptions about the product, market, user behavior, or development process.

  2. Challenge Each Assumption: Take each assumption and critically evaluate its validity. Ask questions like, "Why do we believe this?" and "What if the opposite were true?"

  3. Prioritize Impactful Assumptions: Identify which challenged assumptions could have a significant impact on the project if they were false.

  4. Develop Tests: For the most critical assumptions, devise methods or tests to validate or invalidate them empirically.

  5. Implement Changes: Based on the outcomes of these tests, decide whether to adjust project directions or strategies.

BENEFITS

  • Promotes a deeper understanding of the project's foundational beliefs and constraints.

  • Encourages innovative thinking by removing mental barriers.

  • Can lead to significant breakthroughs in product design and strategy.

CHALLENGES

  • Identifying deeply ingrained assumptions can be difficult, as they are often overlooked or accepted without question.

  • The process can be time-consuming and may require resources for testing assumptions.

  • There is a risk of destabilizing project foundations if key assumptions are proven incorrect.

RECOMMENDED TEAM MEMBERS

Strategists, Product Manager, UI/UX Designer, Engineering, Marketing

DELIVERABLES

  • A comprehensive list of identified and challenged assumptions.

  • A detailed plan for testing the most impactful assumptions.

  • Revised project strategies or design directions based on the outcomes of the assumption tests.

Assumption Busting is particularly valuable in complex projects where unchallenged assumptions could lead to inefficiencies or missed opportunities. This method helps ensure that all project dimensions are built on solid, validated foundations.
