Ideation Techniques

Random Input

Random Input is a brainstorming technique used to stimulate creativity by introducing a random stimulus to the problem-solving process. This unexpected element forces participants to think differently, often leading to unique and innovative solutions.

EFFORT

Low

The method itself is quick and requires minimal preparation, focusing instead on the spontaneity of the session.

DIFFICULTY

Easy, Moderate

While the technique is easy to start, guiding it to produce useful results can require skilled facilitation.

IMPLEMENTATION

  1. Define the Problem: Clearly state the problem or challenge the team is facing.

  2. Introduce Randomness: Use a random word, image, object, or concept unrelated to the problem at hand.

  3. Associate and Connect: Encourage participants to make connections between the random input and the problem, exploring how the unrelated element could influence or solve the issue.

  4. Generate Ideas: Discuss and document all the ideas that emerge from this associative thinking.

  5. Evaluate and Refine: Review the ideas to find practical applications or further inspiration that could be realistically implemented.

  6. Develop Concepts: Choose the most promising ideas to develop into more detailed concepts or solutions.

BENEFITS

  • Breaks conventional thinking patterns, fostering innovative approaches to problems.

  • Engages participants in a fun and unconventional way, which can boost morale and creativity.

  • Often leads to unexpected, groundbreaking solutions by making abstract connections.

CHALLENGES

  • The randomness can sometimes be too abstract, leading to frustration or irrelevant solutions if not properly guided.

  • Requires participants to be open-minded and willing to explore seemingly nonsensical connections.

  • May need several iterations to find truly applicable and effective solutions.
